In John Hughes' important American classic Home Alone (1990), there is a climactic scene in which Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister stands with his back against the kitchen wall, a b.b. gun clutched to his chest. He says to himself "This is it, don't get scared now," and then kneels and shoots Harry (Joe Pesci) in the crotch through the doggy door.

THIS IS IT, DON'T GET SCARED NOW presents a still from this scene, pixelated and blown-up into a 13' x 10' mural painted by Brooklyn based artist Morgan Blair.

I was just researching CSA programs in my area and I found this fun little video on the MTV think website. It's from a couple of years back, but the best part is it's from the town where I grew up in Connecticut! My family always had fresh fruits and vegetables in the summer that we grew in our garden; it's one of the things I miss the most from home. It's cool to see people from where I grew up banding together and supporting local farming.

(clubmumble.com) to curate our second art show in support of
Contributor. Building on the success of last year’s group show, “One Way Or Another” plays upon the personal nature of a skateboard. Things like how you grip your board, how loose your trucks are, and heck, how you know that the size of your heels down to the slightest of millimeters will make the hugest difference. In the end, this little wooden toy seems to be made just for you.

Combining an open call at Society6 and a group of specially invited guests (curated by Andy Jenkins, Bob Kronbauer, Sandro Grison, Justin Cooper, Mike Giles & Annie Lam), we have selected over 40 artists/collectives from around the world to create original artwork on full-size blank maple decks. These specially made boards will be sold at our online shop (www.wearecontributors.bigcartel.com), with all the proceeds going directly back to getting skateboards to kids across Canada.

What makes this project unique is that rather than people buying a already finished piece of artwork, their purchase will commission an artist/studio to make a board especially for them, so when it arrives, it’s an awesome surprise – kind of like a familiar chocolate with a hidden tasty centre!

Marina Abramovic just had a retrospective at MoMA. It's making some waves in the news because of a streaker

The video above was shot by my friend Ben Haynes in 2005 when she visited our art school at the University of Connecticut. At the time this was really annoying and confusing because our design class was taking place in the room across the hall. Now that I look at the video again it was pretty rad that Marina came to our school at all.

Nike 255: New York vs. The World

Nike opened its 255 Elizabeth studio under the creative guidance of the folks over at NoMas. Chris, Kimou, Aaron, and the crew over there did an amazing job. Inside the store, the team can create custom garments from A to Z. They have a laser cutter, chain stitch machine, sewing equipment, embroidery machine, vinyl cutter, heat transfer press, and direct to garment printing available. So radical.

Next up on the list is a store to commemorate the upcoming World Cup and the sport of soccer. Can't wait to see what they do next.

Next Wednesday, May 19th, Milk Gallery will be hosting the 2010 Stoked On Spring art auction. The people over at Stoked are doing great things, and I've been proud to be involved in their art shows for the last couple of years. This event should be a good one, with works by Damien Hirst, Spencer Tunick, Andy Warhol, and Keith Haring on view for auction. Kinda scary that my art will be on the wall in the same room as those heavy hitters.

Justin Hogan is a really talented filmer and editor. We've known each other for quite some time and it's great to see that he's been working on amazing projects as of late. My friend Christian Perkins started a blog. He's a photographer living in NYC. I am feeling the textures and colors in his photos and especially like the quotation from Toebee Parkhurst:

"Those are outsider photos. I'm just saying. They all seem good in my non-photographer opinion, but even the few people in them are facing the opposite way. There's distance in the photos - both from the real sense and the more ummm symbolic or whatever sense. When I think NYC I'm thinking dead pigeons and that unidentifiable black stuff you get on your wheels. Your stuff seems a little standoffish. That's cool, but just so you know.....You're in a tough spot with that album anyway - NYC must be one of the most photographed places in the world." - TP

The folks over at CCS made a nice little video of Brandon Westgate visiting the Zoo York Institute in NYC. In the video they go over the line that I designed with Brandon and the Zoo Crew for Z.Y. Institute. Good to see the thermal has full length sleeves now instead of 3/4, and also glad that they gave the lighthouse logo I designed some love in the video! Looks good. Loving the cameos by Seamus Deegan, Brian Mackin, Robert Lim, Brian Woodward, and Mark Nardelli as well!

I recently got the chance to visit Tim over at Quality Letterpress in San Diego. It was super fun to look around the shop, there were all kinds of typographic goodies and amazing vintage letterpress images that Tim has stored in his seemingly endless typecases. The best part was that he helped me get my wedding invites printed in only three days. That is absolutely crazy considering that a metal plate had to be etched and mounted and overnight shipped to his shop in order for the job to happen. I can't thank him enough! I'll post a video of the printing and the final product soon.

My favorite local store, Igloo, in downtown San Diego has just revamped the inventory on their website. Get there quick to snatch up what remains of Michael Leon's edition of blue cast ceramic skulls. If you aren't into that, tape some stuff up with Stella Bugbee's awesome geometric patterned tape, or get your designerd fashion on with a tee by Geoff McFetridge's skateboard company The Solitary Arts.

Igloo is owned by designer Gary Benzel. Gary is a partner in the design duo Huntergatherer and has been an inspiration to me since the days of he and Todd St.John's company Greenlady. Their work in the skate/art industry is pretty much what inspired me to become a designer towards the end of high school! Great stuff.

I've been getting some fun things from my friends and family lately and I just wanted to share them. First off, my brother Matt sent me the Momofuku cook book by David Chang. Momofuku was (and still is) one of my favorite restaurants of all time in NYC (all iterations: Noodle Bar, SSam Bar, never got to go to Ko). For anyone who hasn't been there, think lots of pork products sourced locally, flavored milks, amazing ice cream, great comfort foods like fried chicken all prepared in totally skewed ways using fresh ingredients, and the ever popular and amazing pork buns. I can't wait to read more of the book and expand my cooking techniques and recipes. Curing and roasting a pork butt is definitely in order for the near future.

Next, my lovely fiance got me the wallet of my dreams from Billykirk. A simple pouch with two buttons and on the back there is a slot where I keep my debit card and I.D. Perfect. I posted a video about those guys a couple of weeks ago. They are two guys that create leather goods out of Pennsylvania. They utilize the talents of the local Amish folk to produce their products, and my wallet has been holding up nicely thanks to their efforts.

Lastly, have to give a shout out to my friends over at Goldcoast. They gave me this fun promo pack with stickers, buttons, an original photo and their super popular "pocket blog". Great ideas from great folks. They are making fun skateboards for people in a genre where attention to detail and design has been lacking. Look out for a graphic that I did for them coming out soon!

The other day I ventured out to a designer's moving sale in downtown San Diego. The studio was full of all kinds of books, and I was able to score this complete set of the LIFE Nature Library. Can't wait to crack them open and look through them all. Also was able to grab a book called Footprints on the Moon and Red Giants and White Dwarfs by Robert Jastrow. Should keep me busy for a while. Here's a recession bargain: the space shuttle. NASA has slashed the price of the 1970s-era spaceships from $42 million to $28.8 million apiece.

The shuttles are for sale once they quit flying, supposedly this fall. When NASA put out the call to museums, schools and others in December 2008, seeking buyers, about 20 expressed interest. NASA spokesman Mike Curie expects more interest, what with the discount.

The space shuttle main engines are now free. NASA advertised them for $400,000 to $800,000 each in December 2008, but no one expressed interest. So now the engines are available, along with other shuttle artifacts, for the cost of transportation and handling.

I wanted to post a couple of videos about craft today. The first one is about Brooklyn based tailor Martin Greenfield. Martin is the man responsible for manufacturing the suits for some of my favorite labels, Band of Outsiders, as well as Freeman's Sporting Club. The second video is of brothers Chris and Kirk Bray of Billykirk who produce handmade leather goods. As a person completely obsessed with where things are made and where things come from, these videos really made me think.

When was the last time most people thought about who made their clothes? Where their food came from? Where the materials that make up the house around them were manufactured? I'd venture to say that most people don't know, much less care, about the answers to those questions. Not that everyone should know where everything comes from and how it's manufactured, but it seems funny that after thousands of years of history of people making things for themselves to survive, today most people have absolutely no clue how anything is made and in general nobody cares. It's pretty sad actually. I say, do some research, buy local and handmade if possible, and make what you can yourself.
